How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in the UK?

What drives the price of an app, realistic ranges for an MVP and a fuller business app, the running costs people forget, and how to get a quote you can trust.

Key takeaways

  • App development cost depends mostly on features, platforms and integrations.
  • A focused MVP costs far less than a full product and gets you real feedback sooner.
  • Budget for running costs: hosting, store fees, maintenance and updates.
  • Ask for a fixed price per phase after a proper discovery stage.

The short answer

There's no single price for an app, because "an app" can mean anything from a simple booking tool to a full marketplace. App development cost in the UK is mostly decided by how many features you need, which platforms you build for and how many other systems the app has to talk to.

As a rough guide, a focused first version (an MVP) for a small business or start-up typically costs in the high four to low five figures, while larger apps with accounts, payments, admin dashboards and integrations cost considerably more. Complex platforms such as marketplaces or SaaS products are priced individually.

For reference, our own app MVPs start from £8,000 and business apps with accounts, payments and admin start from £18,000, with fixed prices agreed after a free discovery call.

What drives the cost

FactorWhy it matters
Number of featuresEvery screen, rule and edge case takes design, build and testing time.
PlatformsiOS, Android, web, or all three. Cross-platform frameworks reduce the cost of supporting both phones.
User accounts and rolesLogins, permissions and different user types add complexity quickly.
PaymentsTaking payments securely means integrations, testing and app store rules.
IntegrationsConnecting to CRMs, booking systems, accounting software or your own database.
Admin dashboardA way for your team to manage users, content and orders.
DesignCustom UI and UX design versus adapting a standard component library.

Cut scope, not quality: the cheapest way to reduce cost is to build fewer features, not to cut corners on testing or security. Our guide to scoping an MVP shows how.

Native, cross-platform or web?

How you build the app has a big effect on cost:

  • Native apps (separate iOS and Android builds) can offer the deepest device features but usually cost the most, because you're maintaining two codebases.
  • Cross-platform apps (one codebase for both phones, using frameworks like React Native or Flutter) suit most business apps and keep build and maintenance costs down.
  • Web apps and progressive web apps run in the browser and can be the most affordable route when you don't need app store distribution.

The running costs people forget

Launching is the start, not the end. Budget for:

  • Hosting and back-end services, which grow with your number of users.
  • App store accounts: Apple's Developer Program has an annual fee and Google Play has a one-off registration fee.
  • Store commission on digital purchases made inside the app, under Apple and Google's rules.
  • Maintenance: updates for new iOS and Android versions, security patches and bug fixes.
  • Third-party services such as maps, messaging, email and analytics.
  • Improvements based on what users actually do once the app is live.

A common rule of thumb is to set aside a meaningful share of the original build cost each year for maintenance and improvements, so the app doesn't fall behind.

How long does it take?

A focused MVP typically takes around 10 to 12 weeks from discovery to launch. Larger apps take several months, usually delivered in phases. Working in two-week cycles, with a usable build at the end of each one, means you see progress early and can change direction before it gets expensive.

How to get a quote you can trust

  1. Start with discovery. A short paid or free discovery phase turns your idea into user flows, a feature list and a realistic plan.
  2. Ask for a fixed price per phase, rather than open-ended day rates.
  3. Check who owns the code. You should own the code and intellectual property once you've paid.
  4. See working software regularly, not just a demo at the end.
  5. Ask about support after launch, including response times and costs.

Be wary of very low quotes. A price far below others often means missing features, little testing or no support after launch. Compare what's included, not just the total.

Mistakes that inflate the budget

  • Building every feature on the wish list before any customer has used the app.
  • Changing the scope halfway through a fixed-price phase.
  • Skipping design and user testing, then rebuilding screens later.
  • Forgetting the admin tools your team needs to run the app.
  • Not budgeting for anything after launch.

App development cost FAQs

Is it cheaper to build for iPhone or Android first?
With a cross-platform framework you can usually launch on both for not much more than one. If you must pick one, choose the platform most of your customers use.
Can I build an app with a no-code tool instead?
For simple internal tools or early prototypes, sometimes. For customer-facing apps that need to scale, integrate and perform well, a properly built app is usually the safer long-term choice.
Do I need an app at all?
Not always. If customers will only use it occasionally, a fast mobile website or web app may do the job for less. Apps make most sense for frequent use, device features or offline access.
Who owns the app once it's built?
You should. Make sure your contract says the code and intellectual property transfer to you on payment, and that store accounts are registered in your business's name.

The bottom line

App development cost comes down to scope, platforms and integrations. Start with a focused MVP, choose a cross-platform or web approach unless you truly need native, budget for running costs and insist on fixed prices per phase. You'll launch sooner, spend less and learn what your users really want.
