Performance Max for Ecommerce: How to Stay in Control
Feed quality, segmentation, exclusions and targets that keep you in control.
Read articleGoogle Shopping ads and free product listings don't use keywords the way search ads do. Instead, Google reads your product feed, the data you send through Google Merchant Center, to decide which searches each product is relevant for and how to display it.
That makes Google Shopping feed optimisation one of the highest-impact tasks for any online store. A better feed means your products appear for more relevant searches, look more appealing in results and stay approved.
Titles are the most important attribute for relevance. Front-load the words shoppers actually search for:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| Aurora Jacket | Women's Waterproof Hiking Jacket – Aurora – Navy – Size 12 |
| Classic Mug | Ceramic Coffee Mug 350ml – Matt Black – Dishwasher Safe |
A useful pattern is product type + key attributes (brand, material, colour, size) + model name. These examples are illustrative; test what works for your products.
Use your search terms report. The searches that trigger your Shopping ads show the exact words customers use. Add the relevant ones to your titles and descriptions.
Mismatches cause disapprovals. If the price or stock in your feed doesn't match your website, Google can disapprove products or suspend your account. Keep your feed syncing automatically.
Custom labels let you group products in ways that matter to your business, then set different budgets or targets for each group.
These labels are especially useful in Performance Max campaigns, as our guide to Performance Max for ecommerce explains.
Don't forget free listings: an optimised feed also helps your products appear in Google's unpaid shopping results.
Google Shopping feed optimisation is ongoing work that pays off across every Shopping campaign and free listing. Write descriptive titles, use strong images, complete every relevant attribute, keep prices and stock in sync, and use custom labels to put budget behind your most profitable products.
