Meta Ads for Local Businesses: A Beginner's Playbook
Audiences, creative and budgets for Facebook and Instagram ads that bring local leads.
Read articleHow Meta's ad auction decides what you pay, how to set a realistic budget from the leads you need, what management costs, and the changes that bring your costs down.
Facebook and Instagram ads (both run through Meta Ads Manager) have no minimum monthly spend. You set a daily or lifetime budget, and Meta spends it showing your ads to the audience you choose. So in one sense, Facebook ads cost exactly what you decide.
The more useful question is what each result costs: each click, lead or sale. That varies a lot by industry, location, audience and, above all, how good your ads and offer are. Published "averages" are often based on US data or a mix of very different businesses, so treat them as directional only and use your own numbers as soon as you have them.
Every time there's space for an ad, Meta runs an auction. The winner isn't simply the highest bidder. Meta considers:
That's why strong creative matters so much: a better ad can win more auctions at a lower cost.
| Factor | Effect on cost |
|---|---|
| Audience size and competition | Popular audiences that many advertisers target cost more. |
| Time of year | Costs usually rise in busy retail periods such as November and December. |
| Campaign objective | Optimising for leads or sales costs more per click than for reach, but brings better results. |
| Creative | Ads people stop for and engage with usually get cheaper results. |
| Landing page or form | A slow page or long form wastes clicks and raises cost per lead. |
Start from the result you want and work backwards:
| Worked example (illustrative) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Leads wanted per month | 30 |
| Target cost per lead | £20 |
| Monthly ad budget | 30 × £20 = £600 |
| If 1 in 5 leads becomes a customer worth £400 | 6 customers, £2,400 revenue |
Give it time to learn. Meta's delivery system needs a steady flow of results to optimise. Budgets that are too small, or changed every day, keep campaigns stuck in the learning phase.
On top of ad spend, most businesses pay someone to plan campaigns, create the ads, set up tracking and optimise each week. Common models are a fixed monthly fee or a percentage of spend.
Our social media packages include paid social from £1,100 a month (Social Growth), with full-service social from £1,800 a month. Ad spend is paid directly to Meta, so you always own your ad account.

Check the ad rules for your sector. Meta has extra restrictions for areas such as health, finance, housing and employment, and UK advertising must follow the CAP Code. Misleading claims can get ads rejected or worse.
Facebook ads cost what you choose to spend, but what you get for that money depends on your offer, creative, tracking and follow-up. Work backwards from your target cost per lead, test creative constantly, reply to leads fast and judge success by customers, not clicks.
