Key takeaways

  • Most UK businesses buy SEO as a monthly retainer; one-off audits and projects are also common.
  • Price depends on competition, the size of your site and how many areas you want to rank in.
  • Good SEO includes technical work, content and links, plus clear reporting.
  • Be wary of guaranteed rankings and very cheap packages with no detail.

The short answer

In the UK, most small and medium businesses pay for SEO as a monthly retainer, so the SEO cost you’re quoted is usually a monthly figure. Prices range widely, from a few hundred pounds a month for a local business with light competition to several thousand pounds for national, ecommerce or highly competitive campaigns. One-off audits and projects are priced separately.

As an example, our own SEO packages start at £750 a month for Local SEO, £1,500 for Growth SEO and £2,500 for Scale SEO, on rolling monthly terms.

How SEO is priced

One-off auditFinding problems before a redesign or a new campaign.Audits that are just tool exports with no priorities.

Agency, freelancer or in-house?

SEO agency

An agency gives you a team: technical SEO, content and outreach specialists, plus tools and reporting. It usually costs more than a freelancer, but covers more skills and doesn't depend on one person.

Freelancer

A good freelancer can be excellent value, especially for smaller sites or specialist tasks. The risk is capacity: one person can't always cover technical, content and link building, and holidays or illness stop the work.

In-house

Hiring an SEO specialist makes sense for larger businesses with a lot of content and development work. Remember to budget for the salary, employer costs, tools, training and the content and links they'll still need to produce.

Compare like with like: a £300 package and a £1,500 package aren't the same product. Ask each provider for the hours, deliverables and reporting included, then compare.

What changes the price

  • Competition: ranking for "solicitor London" takes far more work than "plumber Rochdale".
  • Number of locations: one town, several cities or the whole UK.
  • Size and state of your website: large or technically messy sites need more work.
  • Content needs: how many new pages, articles and improvements are needed each month.
  • Link building: earning quality links and digital PR takes time and expertise.
  • Ecommerce: thousands of product and category pages bring extra technical and content work.

What you should get each month

Whatever you pay, a good SEO service should include:

  • A clear strategy tied to your services, areas and goals.
  • Technical improvements found in an initial audit and ongoing checks.
  • Content: new and improved service, location and blog pages.
  • Authority building: genuine links, mentions and local citations.
  • Google Business Profile optimisation for local businesses.
  • Reporting on enquiries and revenue, not just rankings.
  • Regular calls with someone who knows your account.

How long until you see results?

SEO is a medium-term investment. Technical fixes and Google Business Profile improvements can help within weeks. For competitive searches, most businesses see steady progress over three to six months, with bigger gains over the first year. That's why it pairs well with Google Ads, which can bring enquiries while organic rankings build.

Red flags to avoid

  • Guaranteed first-page or number-one rankings. Nobody controls Google's results.
  • Very cheap packages with no detail about what's done each month.
  • Secret techniques or link networks they won't explain.
  • Long contracts with no way out if results don't come.
  • Reports that only show rankings for keywords nobody searches.
  • They keep ownership of your content, website or accounts.

Cheap links can cost you: paid link schemes and low-quality directories break Google's guidelines and can lead to lost rankings that take months to recover.

How to judge return on investment

Work out what a new customer is worth to you, then track how many enquiries come from organic search each month using Google Analytics 4, call tracking and your form submissions. If a customer is worth £2,000 and SEO brings two extra customers a month, a £1,500 monthly investment more than pays for itself, and the rankings keep working after the work slows down.

SEO cost FAQs

Is cheap SEO worth it?
Sometimes, for a small local business in a quiet market. But very cheap packages often mean automated reports and little real work. Always ask exactly what's done each month and who does it.
Do I need a long contract?
No. Many agencies, including us, work on rolling monthly terms after an initial period. A provider who's confident in their work shouldn't need to lock you in for a year.
Can I do SEO myself?
Yes, especially the basics: Google Business Profile, service pages and reviews. Our local SEO guide is a good place to start. As competition grows, specialist help with technical SEO, content and links usually pays off.
What's the difference between SEO and local SEO pricing?
Local SEO focuses on one area and the map pack, so it usually needs less content and fewer links than ranking across the UK. National and ecommerce SEO cover far more searches and pages, which takes more work each month.

The bottom line

SEO costs depend on your competition, your website and how far you want to reach. Whatever you pay, insist on a clear plan, real work every month and reporting on enquiries rather than vanity rankings, and judge the investment by the customers it brings.
