How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK?
Agency, freelancer and in-house SEO pricing compared, and what you should get for your money.
Read articleGoogle Ads has no minimum spend, so your Google Ads cost is largely in your hands. You choose a daily budget and only pay when someone clicks. In practice, what you pay depends on two things: how much each click costs in your industry and area, and how many clicks you need to get the enquiries or sales you want.
For many UK small businesses, a starting ad budget of a few hundred to a few thousand pounds a month is common, plus management fees if an agency or freelancer runs the account. The rest of this guide shows you how to work out the right number for your business.
Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction between the advertisers targeting that search. The price you pay isn't simply the highest bid. It depends on:
See your own numbers: Google's Keyword Planner (free inside Google Ads) shows estimated "top of page" bid ranges for your keywords and location. It's the best starting point for your industry.
Clicks are most expensive where a single customer is worth a lot and many businesses compete for them. As a general pattern in the UK:
| Industry type | Typical click cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Legal, finance, insurance | Among the highest | High value per client and fierce competition. |
| Private healthcare and dental treatments | High | Treatments such as implants and Invisalign are worth thousands. |
| B2B services and software | Medium to high | Long customer lifetimes justify higher bids. |
| Trades and home services | Medium | Local competition, urgent searches. |
| Ecommerce products | Usually lower | Lower order values, so bids stay lower. |
Published averages are often based on US data, so treat them as directional. Your real costs depend on your keywords, location and how well the account is run.
Start from the result you want, not from a round number. You need three figures:
Cost per lead = cost per click ÷ conversion rate. Monthly budget = cost per lead × leads you want.
| Worked example (illustrative) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average cost per click | £4.00 |
| Conversion rate | 8% |
| Cost per lead | £4.00 ÷ 0.08 = £50 |
| Leads wanted per month | 20 |
| Monthly ad budget | £50 × 20 = £1,000 |
Then check the numbers make sense: if one in four leads becomes a customer worth £800, those 20 leads bring five customers and £4,000 of revenue for £1,000 of spend.
On top of ad spend, most businesses pay someone to set up and run the account. Common models are:
Our own PPC packages start at £500 a month, with no long contracts. Whoever you choose, make sure you own the Google Ads account and can see every change and result.
Check your search terms report: it shows the real searches that triggered your ads. If you've never looked at it, you'll almost certainly find spend you can cut today.
Google Ads costs what you decide to spend, but the right budget comes from your numbers: cost per click, conversion rate and the value of a customer. Track every lead, cut waste every week and send clicks to pages built to convert, and your budget will work much harder.
