How to Scope an MVP (Without Overbuilding)
Turn a big idea into a small first version you can launch quickly and learn from.
Read articleThere's no single price for an app, because "an app" can mean anything from a simple booking tool to a full marketplace. App development cost in the UK is mostly decided by how many features you need, which platforms you build for and how many other systems the app has to talk to.
As a rough guide, a focused first version (an MVP) for a small business or start-up typically costs in the high four to low five figures, while larger apps with accounts, payments, admin dashboards and integrations cost considerably more. Complex platforms such as marketplaces or SaaS products are priced individually.
For reference, our own app MVPs start from £8,000 and business apps with accounts, payments and admin start from £18,000, with fixed prices agreed after a free discovery call.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of features | Every screen, rule and edge case takes design, build and testing time. |
| Platforms | iOS, Android, web, or all three. Cross-platform frameworks reduce the cost of supporting both phones. |
| User accounts and roles | Logins, permissions and different user types add complexity quickly. |
| Payments | Taking payments securely means integrations, testing and app store rules. |
| Integrations | Connecting to CRMs, booking systems, accounting software or your own database. |
| Admin dashboard | A way for your team to manage users, content and orders. |
| Design | Custom UI and UX design versus adapting a standard component library. |
Cut scope, not quality: the cheapest way to reduce cost is to build fewer features, not to cut corners on testing or security. Our guide to scoping an MVP shows how.
How you build the app has a big effect on cost:

Launching is the start, not the end. Budget for:
A common rule of thumb is to set aside a meaningful share of the original build cost each year for maintenance and improvements, so the app doesn't fall behind.
A focused MVP typically takes around 10 to 12 weeks from discovery to launch. Larger apps take several months, usually delivered in phases. Working in two-week cycles, with a usable build at the end of each one, means you see progress early and can change direction before it gets expensive.
Be wary of very low quotes. A price far below others often means missing features, little testing or no support after launch. Compare what's included, not just the total.
App development cost comes down to scope, platforms and integrations. Start with a focused MVP, choose a cross-platform or web approach unless you truly need native, budget for running costs and insist on fixed prices per phase. You'll launch sooner, spend less and learn what your users really want.
